The Wheeling Police Department will be hosting an open house Jan. 31 for those interested in applying to become an officer.

“We want to give our possible applicants a real feel of what it’s like to be an officer in the Friendlier City,” said Shawn Schwertfeger, Wheeling Police Chief.

Activities will include driving toy bulldozers into tents, shooting live firearms while blindfolded, and a donut eating competition. Donut flavors will include WPD favorites bacon, and boot. There will also be an area specifically for showing the applicants what sort of hand to hand combat will be needed on the job.

“To make is as realistic as possible, we made all the practice dummies women. Some are pregnant and most of which are African American. There is also a photo slot on each face where you can place a picture of your wife.”

No RSVP is required for the event, and human resources staff will be on hand to let you know exactly what you can get away with as an officer. Anyone interested in joining the force is encouraged to attend.
