Transgender Day of Remembrance is observed annually on Nov. 20 as a day to memorialize those who have been murdered as a result of transphobia.
In observance, Wheeling native Bobby Hilbert has lowered his confederate flag that he proudly displays in front of his Wheeling home.
“I just felt that people need to know I’m in support of them,” said Hilbert. “This flag is just about pride for me, just like how they all want to be proud as well and by lowering it I’m sending a message to my neighbors who may not be as supportive.”
Hilbert says he hopes by lowering his confederate flag that it draws attention to violence against trans and other minorities.
