U.S. Department of Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm and U.S. Senator Joe Manchin (D-WV) went underground Thursday at American Consolidated Natural Resources’ Harrison County mine to illustrate the importance of coal in the nation for many years to come, according to Manchin’s Facebook page.

American Consolidated Natural Resources, formerly known as Murray Energy Corporation, operates the Harrison County mine in West Virginia. The Harrison County mine, along with over a dozen more mines owned by the company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in late 2019. The bankruptcy led to a restructuring and renaming of the business and several hundred employees were terminated.

Manchin added in his press release that one of his main goals is to “ensure that our coal miners are not left behind,” similarly to those who were left behind at the very mine he visited.
